The good news is that just because you get a chip in your windshield it doesn't mean you need to buy and insert a whole new windshield. The bad news is that, if you do not do anything, the chip or small crack can spider, and then you will be required to get a new windshield!

For all small chips & cracks we suggest DIY windshield repair. A windshield repair kit uses modern technology to quickly and efficiently repair the windshield. This is a much more cost effective solution than getting a new windshield, and safer than waiting for the crack to spider and cause distractions seeing out your window.

So what is a windshield made out of?

Ordinary house glass is quite amazing. It is clear, strong, and very affordable.

The main drawback is that it's brittle, when it breaks the shards are dangerous. This makes it a poor choice for automobile glass. Good news for you is that your windshield is not regular glass!

Plastic is safer in this sense, however it does scratch so, long term it's not clear enough for automobile glass.

Side windows on cars often have tempered glass which is stronger than house glass. When it breaks, there are only little cubes that are not as dangerous as big glass shards.

The challenge was that tempered glass still does not work for windshields. Tempered glass would have a very short lifespan because the windshield is constantly being hit with tiny pebbles, sand, gravel, and other road debris, so cracks and breakage would be too common.

The solution for the windshield became laminated glass.

Laminated glass consists of two thin sheets of tempered glass that are fused to a rubber inner layer. Each of the two sheets are independent. The rubber layer acts like a sponge, absorbing the shock and reducing the chance of breakage from small particles like pebbles. If a rock hits the window hard enough you?ll land up with a stone chip, but it usually only breaks the outer layer of glass. Windshield repair works for the rock chips that have damaged the outer layer of the glass.

If something really big hits the window and shatters both layers, the rubber membrane will stop the windshield from falling in your lap.

If you have a small crack or a chip your problem can be easily repaired at an auto glass shop.

Once correctly repaired, the glass will no longer spider and the damage won?t spread.
